During Tony’s sophomore year after years of struggling in special
education classes, an AmeriCorps member noticed that Tony was
having trouble relaying symbols to information. After ongoing
mentoring with Tony, who is a foster youth, the member’s
impressions and advocacy led to a Dyslexic diagnosis. For
the first time, Tony was able understand why reading was so hard
and why graphics never made sense. This launched his
support team to identify what he needed to be successful.
United Way invited my husband, Zubin, and I as guest speakers in
November at the Koinonia foster youth group home in Loomis, CA.
We shared our experiences about growing up in a different
culture, since both of us grew up in India. We were very
impressed by their curiosity to learn about a different culture
and by the intelligent questions they asked about our experiences
and customs.
100 women donated 133 stockings and 150 gifts through United Way’s Women in Philanthropy so 183 local foster youth, and those emancipated, would have holiday wishes fulfilled.
Hundreds of women gathered to raise funds for foster youth while
celebrating United Way’s Women in Philanthropy’s 10th
anniversary. The event included a fashion show featuring Women in
Philanthropy members and foster youth, sponsored by Macy’s, as
well as a gourmet luncheon and anniversary video featuring
speakers and foster youth from past events.

thank you article written by the foster youth who

It’s hard to believe that United Way’s Women in
Philanthropy program is celebrating its 10th year.
Back in 2001, United Ways across the country were starting local
women’s groups, and three volunteers – Char Donnermeyer, Carol
Wolfe and Donna Chipps – led the effort in forming our group who
decided to focus on helping local foster youth . I started at
United Way in February 2001 and had the pleasure of working
directly with the Women in Philanthropy program since its
inception. It’s definitely been a favorite part of my job.
The event was amazing and heartfelt. We have so many to thank for all the accomplishments and successes we have had. We hope you continute to support this wonderful group and make a postive impact on foster youth for the next decade!

One thousand seven hundred students attended Intel’s annual Kid
to Work Day in Folsom on June 28, including 29 foster youth from
Koinonia Family Services, a United Way certified partner agency.
The youth attended the event as part of United Way’s Women in
Philanthropy group that provides opportunities that prepare
foster youth for emancipation.
Each year, Intel, United Way’s largest corporate donor, opens the
Folsom campus to students ages 8-18. Intel’s goal is to inspire
the next generation of innovators by introducing a hands-on
discovery approach to math, science and technology.
As hundreds of foster youth in our region formally age out of the
foster care system, few are prepared to live independently.
United Way California Capital Region is partnering with its Women
in Philanthropy group and local nonprofits to ensure our region’s
foster youth have financial security as they transition to
independence.
