United Way’s Women in Philanthropy presents
Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, March 19th. The Day at the
Capitol was created to expose the participants to information
about a potential career in government and to inspire them to
reach for their dreams.

March 25, 2013Lorrie Wilson, Women in Philanthropy Co-Chair
Bimla Rhinehart was first and foremost my friend and most
recently a fellow member of Women in Philanthropy
(WIP). Although new to WIP, she made a big impact and
wanted very much to make a positive difference in the lives of
our foster youth. Bimla and I taught a communications
workshop in December at Koinonia. She was a wonderful role
model for them. After we finished the workshop, she
remarked at their exceptional manners, enthusiasm and active
participation.
Bimla was the brains and inspiration behind our
Day at the Capitol event where influential, successful women
leaders in state government spent the afternoon with some of our
foster females mentoring them and providing them with ideas,
information and most of all the desire to pursue their dream
career.
Wondering how you can change the lives of foster youth all year
long? Shop online the way you always do at thousands of stores
like Ann Taylor, Macy’s, Nordstrom and Banana Republic and you
can give back to United Way without it costing you any extra. It
just takes one small step.
We are looking for volunteers to lead various life skills
workshops for local foster youth. See a list of workshop topics
and dates below. You can pick the topic and date that works for
you. Volunteers are responsible for designing the
workshop coursework and for providing all
necessary items and materials.
We are working with Koinonia Family Services located in Loomis
and the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Sacramento at various
locations.
United Way’s Women in Philanthropy is proud to announce that
members Lorrie Wilson and Ruth Miller will now lead the group as
co-chairs.
Together they will coordinate and organize the group’s many
activities benefiting local foster youth, including life skills
workshops, drives and the annual luncheon.
United Way’s Women in
Philanthropy members definitely know how to fill the
community with holiday spirit. During the past month,
United Way staff watched daily as gifts continued to pile in for
local foster youth who are a part of the Sacramento county’s
Gifts for the Heart program. In total, our donors brought
in 132 gifts to brighten the holiday season for 50 local foster
children. In addition to the numerous toys, bikes and other
items that filled our offices, we watched as a continuous stream
of online donations came through to support the purchase of 147
Christmas stockings for the teenage foster youth who are a part
of our $en$e-ability
project.
The holiday season is about spreading joy and love.
Personally, I couldn’t have spent the days leading up to the
holiday season with a better group of women. I’m proud of
the work our Women in Philanthropy members do and I’m proud to
call myself a member.
Lorrie Wilson is bubbly and self-assured as she tries on a
barrage of clothing for a fashion show featuring foster kids and
their supporters. She chatters about which outfit is the most
flattering, but her reasons for participating go deeper than the
animal print dress and chocolate pleather blazer she selects. As
a Women in Philanthropy volunteer, Wilson is determined to help
teens soon to emancipate out of the foster care system choose a
productive path into adulthood.
We use your gifts to fund nonprofits in five counties to work
with low-income households and foster youth to help them
understand how to manage finances and increase savings.
As part of $en$e-Ability, United Way’s Women in Philanthropy is
supporting work with foster youth to increase self-sufficiency
through Individual Development Accounts, bank accounts that
provide a 2:1 match for every dollar a foster youth saves.
Thank you to everyone who attended United Way’s 11th Annual Women
in Philanthropy Luncheon yesterday on October 15 at the
Crocker Art Museum. We hope you enjoyed the celebration of our
past successes for foster youth and plan to join as we
continue to help them blossom into independent, young adults.
We also want to give thanks to all the generous event
sponsors, outfit sponsors for Foster Youth, our emcee Kitty
O’Neal and our inspirational keynote speaker Vanessa Diffenbaugh!

Thank you Arden Fair Mall for partnering with United Way’s Women
in Philanthropy for Fashion’s Night Out. With these
funds we are better equipped to prepare local foster
youth to lead successful lives! We also want to give thanks to
all the attendees, restaurants, wineries and staff who made this
possible. We could not have raised this without you and it showed
the true LIVE UNITED spirit!

United Way invited my husband, Zubin, and I as guest speakers in
November at the Koinonia foster youth group home in Loomis, CA.
We shared our experiences about growing up in a different
culture, since both of us grew up in India. We were very
impressed by their curiosity to learn about a different culture
and by the intelligent questions they asked about our experiences
and customs.
Hundreds of women gathered to raise funds for foster youth while
celebrating United Way’s Women in Philanthropy’s 10th
anniversary. The event included a fashion show featuring Women in
Philanthropy members and foster youth, sponsored by Macy’s, as
well as a gourmet luncheon and anniversary video featuring
speakers and foster youth from past events.

It’s hard to believe that United Way’s Women in
Philanthropy program is celebrating its 10th year.
Back in 2001, United Ways across the country were starting local
women’s groups, and three volunteers – Char Donnermeyer, Carol
Wolfe and Donna Chipps – led the effort in forming our group who
decided to focus on helping local foster youth . I started at
United Way in February 2001 and had the pleasure of working
directly with the Women in Philanthropy program since its
inception. It’s definitely been a favorite part of my job.
The event was amazing and heartfelt. We have so many to thank for all the accomplishments and successes we have had. We hope you continute to support this wonderful group and make a postive impact on foster youth for the next decade!
